Most of the patients who apply with the complaint of breast size need breast reduction surgery due to health problems beyond aesthetic concerns.

Especially at young ages, breast size also causes the person to face psychological problems. Breast size also affects the skeletal system. The weight of the breasts forces the body forward and triggers disorders such as neck hernia, hunching in the back, and loss of strength due to nerve compression in the arms. With osteoporosis, this pressure on the skeletal system increases. The solution to these problems is usually surgery and a breast reduction operation is required.

How is the surgery done?

It is aimed to achieve maximum shape formation with the least surgical scar. Therefore, pre-operative breast measurements and drawings should be well planned. This stage is at least as important as the surgery for the surgical result to be achieved.

With breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, breast size reduction, shaping and giving the breast a more upright appearance. In these surgeries, skin, subcutaneous adipose tissue and breast tissue as well as mammary gland tissues are removed from the large breast.

In breast reduction surgeries, not only reduction, but also lifting and lifting operations are performed. In addition, if the size of the nipple called areola is large, it is possible to reduce it and shape it.

Although it varies from person to person in breast reduction surgeries, scars are seen in the bra area or under the bikini. Depending on the surgical technique and the degree of reduction of the breast, these scars stand out as inverted T, J or L-shaped scars around the nipple-areola and towards the inframammary fold area. These scars, which are prominent and red in the first months, become less noticeable in the future.

Although the duration of the operation varies depending on the size of the breast and the techniques applied, it takes around 2-4 hours.

What are the points to be considered after the surgery?

The surgery takes place under general anesthesia. Usually, the patient is discharged after an overnight stay in the hospital.

About 1-4 days after surgery. Drains are placed in both breast areas to be removed on days. Pain is seen in the first 2 days, which can be reduced with painkillers. It is also possible to see swellings or bruises around the breast. However, these usually go away after 2 weeks.

Special sports bras are worn to reduce post-operative edema. It is possible to return to desk jobs 4-5 days after the operation. Exercise and heavy lifting is generally not recommended for 3-4 weeks.

It takes 6-12 months for the swelling in the breast to completely disappear and the breast to take its final shape.

Can I breastfeed after breast reduction surgery?

In some cases, since the milk ducts are also removed to some extent, post-pregnancy breastfeeding functions may also be affected. In some studies, it is revealed that this rate is 10-20%.

Who are the risk groups?

In diabetic patients, those with systemic diseases, in cases of various vitamin and mineral deficiencies, wound healing problems, especially in smokers, and the appearance of scars that may occur in the wound can be seen. Therefore, possible risks should be explained to these patient groups.
